Taiwan’s mild climate and fertile soil create the ideal condition to grow fruits; especially pineapples. The production of pineapple was a key industry for Taiwan during the Japanese Colonial Period (1895 - 1945), becoming their main export. Their expertise allowed them to become a large-scale producer of canned pineapple in the 1930s. After WWII, Taiwan’s increased surplus of pineapples in the 1970s made it imperative to find uses for it. Ingenuity and necessity are what created Taiwan’s must-try item; the Pineapple cake (鳳梨酥).
